We celebrate certain events because they are important to our life. These are days of fun and laughter, joy and gaiety. Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated throughout India with splendor and fervor. Diwali celebrations are a huge carnival of five continuous day, each day held its own traditional and customary significance. The theme of the festivity is unique, the victory of good over bad or victory of light over dark. Ceremonies of Chotti Diwali have its own historical myths. People also call the Chotti Diwali with the names of small Diwali or Narak Chaturdasi.
It is celebrated on the second day of Dipavali celebrations, on fourteenth day in Hindu month of Kartik. It is similar to Diwali; people lighten their houses with earthen lamps, electric lamps and bulbs. At night children burst fireworks but in minimum scale. On this day people clean their houses and wear new clothes. People visited to their relatives and friends home to give Diwali gifts, Diwali wishes and sweets, it is traditional during Diwali. People went to market places to buy things for Lakshmi pooja, decorating the home and fireworks. Women decorate the entrance and balconies with rangoli patterns and make small footmarks of rice paste. Houses are decorated with colorful (jhaller) paper chain, ribbons and garlands. People make special kind of food and sweets to offer to gods or for relatives. When sun sets, people light oil lamps or candles around their homes. Then whole family worship Goddess Lakshmi for hes blessings and for drive away the shadow of evil spirit, at night sky lit with fireworks.
The celebration of Narak-Chaturdashi or Narak Chaudas is most commonly known as Chotti Diwali. According to Indian rituals and traditions, Narakasur, a demon king became immensely powerful after attaining a boon from Lord Brahma. He began to torture the innocent people and kidnapping the daughters of gods and saints. He acquire the whole kingdoms by making disorders, he defeated Lord Indra and then attain the properties of Aditi, the goddess of Surloka. Unable to bear the tyranny of Narakasura all gods went to Lord Krishna and appealed to put an end to Narakasura’s brutality. Then Lord Krishna destroys the demon with the help of his wife Satyabhama. Since death of Narakasura is celebrated as Choti Diwali every year with joy and fun.
Everyone gives best wishes to each other and lightens some candles and divas at the main entrance of the door, People also burst some crackers. The other regional Names of Choti Diwali are Agyaras, Wagh Baras, Yamadeepdaan, Dhan Teyras, Dhantheran / Asweyuja Bahula Thrayodasi , Choti Diwali, Narkachaturdashi, Dhanteras
